This course is intended for an adult audience whose primary focus is youth (aged 14-25). Participants who take this course are well prepared to interact confidently about mental health with the young people in their lives, including at schools, extra-curricular activities, social services, family, friends, and communities. In addition to the four most common disorders discussed in MHFA BASIC, this course includes instruction about eating disorders and deliberate self-injury. MHFA does not teach people to be therapists. Participants will receive official certification from the mental health commission of Canada. Can be used for employment.
Course Objectives:
Recognize the symptoms of youth related mental health problems, including eating disorders, substance-related disorders, mood-related disorders, anxiety, and trauma-related disorders.
Provide help to prevent the mental health problem from worsening
Guide the person to more appropriate professional help
Provide the recovery of good mental health
Provide comfort to a person experiencing a mental health problem
